Two years ago Google made the similar promise, which has since proved controversial. Entertainment industries were regularly claiming that Google did not follow through on that promise. Now the company says the results will be noticeable.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Google explained that it has now refined the signal in ways it expects to visibly affect the rankings of some of the illegal websites. However, the tech giant didn’t provide details on which websites were being demoted, or how it will affect their rankings. Apparently, the attribute showing how close to the top of its results a website appears when relevant keywords are searched.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">In addition, the company claimed that it has been testing new ad formats which show links to legitimate digital music and video services when such keywords as “download”, “free” and “watch” are used; as well as removing terms from its autocomplete feature in the case when they “return results with many DMCA demoted websites”.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Google provided some statistics, saying that it had received just over 224 million takedown requests for search results last year, and the average time spent on dealing with them was less than 6 hours. The tech giant ultimately removed 222 million links, which means that only less than 1% was rejected or reinstated after review for various reasons: for example, because the company needed additional information, was unable to find the page, or came to a conclusion that the content was not infringing.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">This was all about individual links to infringing content, but the latest change to Google’s search algorithm will focus on entire websites. The ones most likely to be affected are mentioned in Google’s online transparency report. The company ranked websites by the number of takedowns received: RapidGator, 4Shared and Dilandau were the most often mentioned last year – each of them accounted for over 7 million DMCA notices.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The BPI appeared the most active takedown-sender last year, submitting over 43 million notices to Google. The British anti-piracy outfit admitted that it would like to see other search engines, including Bing and Yahoo, follow the suit. The BPI is also pressing for Google to delist entirely websites that have been ruled against the law by the courts. They include portals blocked by British Internet service providers: The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents, H33T, Fenopy, and another 21 websites. However, Google may push back against this pressure from the British outfit, claiming that it would be inappropriate to remove entire websites instead of certain links.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Finally, the BPI demands Google to be faster at removing “pirate applications” from Android’s Google Play store.</span></span>

It's a classic Apple-style upgrade: Despite dozens of changes and new features, you won't need to relearn anything to use it. But if you own an iPhone or iPad, you'll find that your Mac and iOS device will work together in ways you never imagined. When both Yosemite and the forthcoming iOS 8 are on your devices, you'll be able to answer your phone on your Mac, or start a mail message on your phone and finish typing it on your M/ac.</span></div>

We weren't able to test the new features that connect OS X with an iOS device because Apple hasn't yet supplied test devices with iOS 8 installed, but you can expect a follow-up story on iOS 8/Yosemite integration before long. These integration features include an Instant Hotspot that lets you convert your phone into a wireless router that your Mac can use to connect to the Internet (just make sure you've got a generous data plan). The dock is now two-dimensional, and the only traces of three-dimensional effects are the subtle shadows under the windows. If you look closely, you'll see that some design elements are slightly translucent. The Finder sidebar is a good example. Also notice the redesigned icons for the standard apps. Does anyone else think the old Finder icon looked equally cheerful but a lot more intelligent?</span></div>

The Dashboard will still be available on new systems, but if you upgrade to Yosemite from an earlier version, and the installer detects that you've never used the Dashboard at all, the OS will quietly delete it to save space.</span></div>

Just when you got used to the routine of uploading a large file to Dropbox or some other service and sending a download link via Mail, along comes MailDrop, Apple's new service that lets you upload files up to 5GB in size to a 30-day storage site, and then it sends a download link in a mail message. It's all done in Mail, and it's blissfully simple. By the way, as far as we can tell, MailDrop isn't actually working yet, but our preview version of Yosemite at least let us see how it will work when it does.</div>

US Authorities May Pretend To Be You On Facebook

According to the Justice Department, a federal agent legitimately impersonated a young woman on the Internet by creating a Facebook page in her name without her knowledge. He had arrested Arquiett and accused her of participating in a drug ring. Later, the judge decided that the single mom was a bit player who took responsibility and sentenced her to probation. When Sondra was awaiting trial, the agent created the fake Facebook page with her real name, published pictures from her seized mobile, and was talking to at least one wanted fugitive. Of course, everything was done without Arquiett’s knowledge.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">In the meantime, Facebook’s Community Standards clearly read that pretending to be someone else, creating a false presence for a company, or creating multiple accounts undermines community and violates the website’s terms. Nothing is said about any exceptions for police and spooks. Nevertheless, the fake Facebook page is still there.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">Apparently, the actions of the US Drug Enforcement Administration might have never been discovered if Arquiett, now 28, hadn’t sued back the agent, accusing him of violating her privacy and placing her in danger. The response of the authorities was the following: the agent admitted that Sondra didn’t give express permission for the use of pictures stored on her phone on the fake Facebook page. At the same time, the DEA claimed that Arquiett implicitly consented by granting access to data stored in her mobile and by consenting to use it in order to help an ongoing criminal investigations.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">This means that the American authorities can just walk into your house, steal your pictures and publish them on the Internet if they have a reason to believe that it can help arrest your friends. Of course, when the woman gave permission for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look at her phone, she could never imagine that she would have consented to her pictures being used in like that. Unfortunately, the US Justice Department believes that it is just fine.</span></span>

As for the popular brands, Apple’s iPad dominates, making up half of the tablets sold. The statistics also revealed that the number of children aged from 5 to 15 using a tablet to go on the Internet has doubled within the last 12 months and now accounts for 42%. At the same time, use of personal computers for Internet access has dropped by 3% to 88%. It is also known that PC sales have steadily decreased over the last 3 years, with tablets and other mobile devices gaining popularity.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The tablets are not only used for going online. At the moment, 71% of children aged from 12 to 15 have a social media profile on Facebook, Twitter or another social network. The interesting fact is that girls are more likely to have an Instagram, SnapChat or Tumblr account than boys in that age range, while boys mostly prefer YouTube – the statistics says that boys are more than twice as likely to use the popular streaming service.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">The UK regulator also discovered that almost 85% of parents directly supervise activities of their children on the Internet and 82% have set rules regarding Internet access by children. More than 50% of parents also use various instruments to manage their children’s online behavior on tablets and other devices: they include Internet filters, password protection and anti-virus software.</span><br style="background-color: white;" /><br style="background-color: white;" /><span style="background-color: white;">More than 75% of adults believe they know enough about the worldwide web and how it works to protect their children.
