Nokia today opened its mysterious black box to reveal the N1 Android tablet—its first major product release since leaving the smartphone business.
Following a weekend of teasing tweets, Nokia's head of products, Sebastian Nyström, took the stage at this week's Slush 2014 conference in Helsinki to discuss the company's future.
That future includes the N1, which is expected to hit shelves in China during the first quarter of 2015 for an estimated $249. Nokia said it anticipates expanding sales to other markets, but provided no details.
"We are pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers' hands with the N1 Android tablet, and to help make sophisticated technologies simple," Nyström said in a statement.
Nokia N1The 7.9-inch, 2,048-by-1,536 slate features a one-piece aluminum design and weighs in at 6.9mm. It will come in Lava Grey and Natural Aluminum colors and sport Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Running a 2.4GHz 64-bit Intel Atom quad-core processor, the N1 includes the predictive Nokia Z Launcher interface, which makes it easy to find content quickly. Just scribble the first letter of the app you want on the Gorilla Glass 3 screen (T for Twitter, for example), and the Launcher will pull up all matches. Z Launcher also learns the user's habits, and over time can predict and highlight the apps it expects will be needed, based on time of day and location.
There's 2GB of memory and 32GB of storage, as well as an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with fixed focus; 1080p video recording is supported.
"The N1 has a delightfully intuitive interface and an industrial design to match it," Nyström said. "This is a great products for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet."
Nokia in April sold its handset business to Microsoft for $7.2 billion, turning its focus toward mapping and network infrastructure. The N1 tablet—a fresh start for the company—comes just after Microsoft launched its first post-Nokia smartphone, the Lumia 535.
